What is a story and how do you tell one across different media?
Our panel of expert storytellers from different fields – Novels, TV & Film, Comics and Visual Art discuss the process of telling a story in their chosen form. What are the minimum building blocks to tell a story? How do you put them together? Is a three-act structure really necessary? What are the particular constraints and freedoms of different media? Join Tim Lebbon, Becky Pepperdine, Stephen Volk and Hannah Berry as they discuss story. This is a conversation between creators you won’t want to miss.

Tim Lebbon is a New York Times best-selling writer from South Wales. He’s had more than 40 novels published as well as hundreds of novellas and short stories. His latest is the eco-horror Eden. Other recent releases include The Edge, The Silence, The Family Man and Blood Of The Four with Christopher Golden. He has won four British Fantasy Awards, a Bram Stoker Award, and a Scribe Award, and has been nominated for many others.The movie of The Silence, starring Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka, debuted on Netflix April 2019, and Pay The Ghost, starring Nicolas Cage, was released Halloween 2015. Becky Pepperdine is a multimedia creator with a weekly stream on twitch showcasing craft techniques. Her work has been shown on the BBC, at Bafta and the Cannes Film Festival and combines film, installation and traditional crafts to tell stories in new ways. Through her online platform she is now exploring interactivity and working on a number of installations which retell ancient myths and fairy tales through innovative, hands on experiences.
Stephen Volk was responsible for BBC TV’s notorious “Halloween hoax” Ghostwatch and ITV’s paranormal drama series Afterlife starring Andrew Lincoln and Lesley Sharp, as well as feature films such as The Awakening starring Rebecca Hall and Dominic West, and Ken
Russell’s Gothic which starred Natasha Richardson as Mary Shelley. As well as a BAFTA-winning screenwriter, he is the award-winning author of three short story collections, most recently The Parts We Play, has written audio drama for Hammer Chillers, and stage plays such as The Chapel of Unrest, which was performed at The Bush Theatre starring Jim Broadbent and Reece Shearsmith. www.stephenvolk.net
Hannah Berry is a comics creator, cartoonist, writer, illustrator, and current UK Comics Laureate. She is the author of three highly acclaimed and occasionally award-winning graphic novels published by Jonathan Cape: Livestock (2017), Adamtine (2012) and Britten & Brülightly (2008), and has contributed to numerous publications worldwide, including projects for First Second, Casterman, the Edinburgh International Book Festival and 2000AD, as well as regular cartoons for New Statesman and Prospect magazine. In 2018 she was inducted as a fellow of the Royal Society of Literature.
